What is the difference between a klezmer and a muzikant? When the Belf Orchestra’s pianist plays a major harmony over a minor melody, when the tempo constantly changes, when the clarinetist and the violinist don’t agree on the structure – should we see those things as mistakes or rather as aesthetic effects? Violinist Amit Weisberger will share some of his favorite country-side repertoire: Beregovsky, Kiselgof, Belf, and the festive Jewish music from the Bukovina region (North Romania).
This ensemble is especially suited for violinists. We will play crazy slides and fast trills, tzvey-strunen (double-strings), the sekund (violin accompaniment), and other tricks that make our sound as rustic and expressive as possible. No sheet music will be used; we will learn by ear.
