Each year, we have the opportunity to feature faculty members who have created new work, or who are at KlezKanada’s Laurentian Retreat for the first time. Here are a selection of the concerts that will be presented at KlezKanada 2014.
From Latvia and Russia, FORSHPIL is one the hottest of the new generation klezmer bands, playing their own unique Yiddish psychedelic rock. Led by Sasha Lurje and Ilya Shneyveys, Forshpil’s music is a fusion of Yiddish songs, Hasidic nigunim, and klezmer tunes mixed with with 1960s-1970s rock and spiced up by funk, reggae, and jazz. Energetic yet intimate performances, vintage analog sounds, and multi-colored, deeply passionate singing creates a Yiddish psychedelic experience. Also featured are the astounding Russian musicians from St. Petersberg’s Jewish music scene: Mitia Khramtsov (violin and bass), Roman Shinder (guitar), and Zheka Lizin (drums). www.forshpil.com
The newly-formed LORIN SKLAMBERG, POLINA & MERLIN SHEPHERD TRIO brings together three world-class musicians performing a unique and unforgettable program of passion, depth & subtlety. Athough their families come from very close geographical locations, they represent three nations (US, UK, Russia). At the end of the 19th Century, Merlin’s great-grandparents emigrated from Ukraine and Romania to escape pogroms and seek a better world in Western Europe. Lorin’s ancestors emigrated from a small town in Ukraine to the United States. Polina’s grandparents escaped from the Sho’ah by fleeing from Kiev and Odessa to Siberia. This is the music of our global village: a joint style which has its roots in traditional forms and takes us to new dimensions. Their programme includes traditional and newly composed Yiddish and Russian song blended with Klezmer and southern Mediterranean music.
SHURA LIPOVSKY‘s philosophy of life encompasses harmony and human collaboration. It is no surprise that her work is a mixture of hard work, striving for the best, and searching for a harmonious and musical cohesion. She is a searcher, finding new musical landscapes within the Yiddish songs she has composed, and discovering new expressions of Jewish music. Shura will present selections from her new recording, VAYTInKE, a stunning selection of Yiddish songs
SANDARAA is a new band from Lahore, Pakistan, and Brooklyn, New York. The group is fronted by vocalist Zeb Bangash and features Brooklyn musicians and KlezKanada faculty members Michael Winograd, Richie Barshay, and Patrick Farrell. Sandaraa explores a vast repertoire of South Asian material while blending it with the sounds of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. www.sandaraa.com
This summer we will present the FRAUENSTIMMEN CABARET. KlezKanada attendees will have the opportunity to be a part of this beautiful production. Created by Lynn Torgove and Becky Wexler, this musical cabaret portrays the lives of seven women who were imprisoned at the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp – the only camp originally built as an all women’s prison.
