Eligibility Applicants
Applicants must be between (and including) the ages of 16 and 35. We look for individuals with an interest in learning about Yiddish/Jewish culture and its artistic traditions and a desire to develop as artists within these rich traditions, exploring both the roots and contemporary innovations of the culture. We welcome students with interest in a wide variety of areas including music, theatre, dance, visual arts, film, writing and Yiddish studies. Although actual numbers will vary according to the applications received, there are a number of spots reserved for each area of interest.
The David A. Stein Memorial Filmmaking Scholarships
KlezKanada continues to offers an in-house initiative for budding filmmakers. These particular scholarship recipients document the week, particularly the incredible performances, and develop their own creative self-expressions of the KlezKanada experience through film/video. This scholarship is fully funded by the Stein family in memory of the late Toronto filmmaker David A. Stein.
Fees
Scholarship students pay a set fee of $350CAN/US. This fee covers room and board, full programming and the shuttle from Montreal to KlezKanada and back.
Deadlines
All applications must be submitted online or postmarked no later than May 1st, 2012.
Notification
We will notify all successful applicants by early June. The full fee from successful applicants is due by July 1st, 2012. A waiting list will be established once we have reached our maximum number of scholarship recipients.
Underage Scholarship Students
Students under the age of 17 may attend KlezKanada only when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Travel
A shuttle bus will provide transportation from Montreal to KlezKanada and back for those that need it. This service is free for scholarship students. Further information about this service will be provided with your letter of acceptance. Travel to and from Montreal is the responsibility of the student.
Conduct
Scholarship participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which fits the goals of KlezKanada and the students themselves. The scholarship is competitive and students are expected to avail themselves of the opportunities made open to them.
Substance Abuse Policy
KlezKanada aims to create a safe and healthy community for all ages. An emphasis is placed on creating a family atmosphere. The success of the institute relies on the responsible behaviour of all registrants, scholarship students and faculty. Cigarettes may be smoked ONLY IN DESIGNATED AREAS. Responsible use of alcohol by adults of legal drinking age is permitted and alcohol is served on the premises. However we expect that those who choose to drink, will consume responsibly and with respect for and awareness of those around them. Illegal substances will not be tolerated. Reports of usage will be dealt with immediately by the program administrators.
