Please welcome visual artist and educator Benny “Beynish” Ferdman, who will be joining our faculty for the first time this summer! Benny will lead visual arts workshops and facilitate the creation of a collaborative outdoor art installation that will evolve over the course of the week.
Benny’s work draws from diverse narratives and cultural motifs of East European Jewish culture and the Yiddish language which he grew up with. A collector of materials from our human, natural and cultural landscape, Benny juxtaposes and reinterprets these images and stories to reclaim wonder in everyday life. These interests will inform his workshop Yiddish Goes into the Wild.
Born in Sweden to Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivors, Benny was raised in and is based out of Los Angeles. Together with his wife Shari Davis, he is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Creative Ways, an LA-based organization cultivating dialogue across cultures, generations and communities. He is the former founding Arts Director at deToledo High School and the recipient of the Milken Educators Award for his trailblazing approach illuminating the Jewish tradition in the arts. Additionally, he is Co-Founder/Director of Camp Wildcraft, an art and nature summer camp that explores the wild wonder of the world around us.
