Di rayze aheym | The journey home in/en concert
In 1983, on the 40th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Irena Klepfisz and her mother Rose returned to Poland for the first time since their emigration to America. On her return from this trip, Irena composed Di rayze aheym / The journey home, first published in 1985. 40 years later, in 2025, Avi Fox-Rosen composed song settings for Irena’s words. Join us for an intimate concert in which Irena recites her words, while Avi and klezmer fiddle virtuoso Alicia Svigals perform these new musical settings.

Irena Klepfisz
A trailblazing lesbian poet, child Holocaust survivor, and political activist whose work is deeply informed by socialist values, Irena Klepfisz is a vital and individual American voice. Irena Klepfisz taught Jewish Women’s Studies at Barnard College for 22 years. She is the author of five books of poetry including Her Birth and Later Years: New and Collected Poems, 1971-2021 (winner of the 2023 Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry; finalist for a 2023 National Jewish Book Award), Periods of Stress, Keeper of Accounts, Different Enclosures, A Few Words in the Mother Tongue, and a collection of essays Dreams of an Insomniac. She is one of the foremost advocates of the Yiddish language and its renaissance in the United States. Her work has appeared in Tablet Magazine, The Manhattan Review, The Georgia Review, In geveb, Sinister Wisdom, The Current, and Languages of Modern Jewish Cultures.
Avi Fox-Rosen
Avi Fox-Rosen is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, NY, equally at home in rock, Yiddish, klezmer, theater, or improvised music worlds. He’s worked with many of the leading lights in new Yiddish music over the last 20 years. His newest album project, Di rayze aheym / The journey home sets the poem by Irena Klepfisz to lush music. Avi also co-leads Yiddish Princess, and composed settings of Itzik Manger’s Khumesh Lider with Basya Schechter.
Alicia Svigals
Alicia Svigals, violinist/composer and a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics, is the world’s foremost klezmer fiddler. She almost single handedly revived the tradition of klezmer fiddling, which had been on the brink of extinction until she recorded her debut album Fidl in the 1990’s. Svigals has performed with and written for violinist Itzhak Perlman, and has worked with the the Kronos Quartet, playwrights Tony Kushner and Eve Ensler, poet Allen Ginsburg, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Debbie Friedman and Chava Alberstein. She was awarded a Foundation for Jewish Culture commission for her original score to the 1918 film The Yellow Ticket and is a MacDowell fellow. In February 2018, Svigals and jazz pianist Uli Geissendoerfer released Beregovski Suite, their fantasy on klezmer melodies culled from the archive of early 20th century Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski. Since 2018, Svigals has been collaborating with celebrated silent film pianist/composer Donald Sosin on a series of scores for newly-restored silent movies: The Ancient Law (1923), City without Jews (1924), a 1992 faux-silent film by artist Eleanor Antin, A Man Without a World, as well as East and West starring Molly Picon. They co-compose and record the scores for theatrical release and home media, and tour these projects internationally as ‘cine-concerts’ – live performances to screenings of the films. In May 2023, Svigals was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by the Jewish Theological Seminary for “extraordinary contributions to the arts and Jewish life.” In June 2024 she released her newest album, Fidl Afire, on the Borscht Beat label—a return to her roots with a full-on party band. In August 2024 she was awarded the 2024 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Folk/Traditional arts.

En 1983, à l’occasion du 40e anniversaire du soulèvement du ghetto de Varsovie, Irena Klepfisz et sa mère Rose sont retournées en Pologne pour la première fois depuis leur émigration en Amérique. C’est à son retour de voyage qu’Irena a écrit Di rayze aheym (Le voyage de retour), publié en 1985. Quarante ans plus tard, en 2025, Avi Fox-Rosen a choisi de mettre ces mots en musique. Alicia Svigals
