Socalled with Strings

Monday, August 24th – 8:30-9:30 pm EDT

We open this year’s retreat with vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, play-write, film-maker, magician, and all around creative force, Socalled (Josh Dolgin), singing both traditional melodies and original compositions, accompanied by lush string quartet.

Rachel Lemisch & Jason Rosenblatt

Tuesday, August 25th – 5:30-6:30 pm EDT

Rachel Lemisch, a trombonist from a family of klezmorim that goes back generations, and Jason Rosenblatt, one of the world’s leading performers on diatonic harmonica, are beloved long-time KlezKanada faculty and founding members of Shtreiml. Don’t miss this concert from the Lemisch/Rosenblatt home in Montreal!

This concert is presented in partnership with the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network as part of their project A Different Tune documenting the musical cultures of Quebec’s minority cultures.

 

East Meets West Revisited

Tuesday, August 25th – 8:30-9:30 pm EDT

 KlezKanada looks back and revisits East Meets West, a watershed moment in the history of contemporary Yiddish culture, a time when artists, performers, and communities from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union reconnected with their counterparts in North America and Western Europe. This concert will feature luminaries from both sides of the Atlantic, including: Michael Alpert (USA/Scotland), Efim Chorny and Suzanna Ghergus (Moldova), Sasha Lurje (Germany/Latvia), and the Strauss Warschauer Duo (USA).

Lush & Hora: Joanne Borts in Concert

Wednesday, August 26th – 5:30-6:30 pm EDT

This concert features longtime celebrated KlezKanada faculty member, actress, and vocalist, Joanne Borts, who brings you “Lush and Hora,” two sides of Yiddish music; the joyful and the melancholy, the sweet and the sad.

The Klezmatics

Wednesday, August 26th – 8:30-9:30 pm EDT

To celebrate KlezKanada’s 25th anniversary, we are thrilled to welcome back the Grammy Award-winning group, The Klezmatics, as this year’s headlining act. 

With Lorin Sklamberg (vocals, accordion, guitar), Lisa Gutkin (violin), Frank London(trumpet), Matt Darriau (clarinet, saxophone, kaval), Paul Morrissett (bass) and Richie Barshay (drums).

Freed Fellows Spotlight

Thursday, August 27th – 5:30-6:30 pm EDT

The newly minted Ruth and Joe Freed Fellowship Program is packed full of excellence this summer. We are excited to feature some of these fellows in this concert, including vocalist Rachel Weston, bassist and vocalist Kirsten Lamb, and accordionist/keyboardist Adam Matlock. Special guest performance by one of last year’s fellows, and one of this year’s program coordinators, Adah Hetko. Hosted by Sandy Fox (also a Freed Fellow!).

Silver Anniversary Ball

Thursday, August 27th – 8:30-9:30 pm EDT

This is KlezKanada’s 25th anniversary! We invite you to decorate your room, dress up in your best sparkly outfit, and join us for a Silver Anniversary Ball, which will feature opportunities to dance together, led by Avia Moore and Steve Weintraub, as well as spotlight performances from our incredible faculty.

“Where Have You Been?”: 25 Years of KlezKanada in Lantier, Quebec”

Friday, August 28th – 5:30-6:30 pm EDT

Join us for the world premiere of a brand-new creation of theatre and music, crafted especially in honour of KlezKanada’s 25th Anniversary. A dream team, led by Canadian singer-songwriter Geoff Berner and theatre and puppetry master Jenny Romaine, with artists and researchers including Sadie Gold-Shapiro, Rachel Lemisch, Simone Lucas, and Ira Temple, has decided to learn about the actual site and people of Lantier, Quebec, where our Retreat has taken place for 25 years.

Come to a single class, a whole day, or the entire week!

Registering for KlezKanada’s Virtual Retreat is easy! Visit our Programming page to see our full schedule of programs. Every class, concert, lecture, and workshop has a link where you can register to receive access to the Zoom room or other platform where the program will take place and receive any course materials. Pick and choose what you’d like to attend!

Want to come for the entire week? Purchase one of our FESTIVAL PASSES to save money and get access to it all! Have a full house right now? Get a HOUSEHOLD PASS makes the whole week’s programming available for up to six people in one home across multiple screens for a substantial discount. DAY PASSES are also available if you prefer to come for just a day or two of the Retreat. After you purchase one of these passes, you’ll receive an access code that will allow you to register for individual classes, concerts, and everything else at no additional cost.

ORIENTATIONS

Be sure to attend our orientation sessions to see and greet all some friendly faces new and old, and get up to speed on everything you need to know for the week.

Technical Orientation: August 24, 2020, 3-4 PM EDT Get tips on how best to use Zoom and how to set up your devices for an optimal experience. All are welcome! This event is free, but registration is required

General Community Orientation: August 24, 2020, 7:15-8:15 PM EDT Come learn about what the KlezKanada experience is all about, connect with our community, and get ready for the week all together! For newcomers and veteran participants alike. No registration is required for this event which you can watch live on Facebook.

Azrieli Scholarship Program: Sunday, August 23, 2020, Time and link TBA A special orientation session for Azrieli Scholarship recipients. 

FINANCIAL ACCESSIBILITY

To make our programs as accessible as possible during these times, we have also set aside a limited number of free or pay-what-you-can registrations at every level, designated for those with financial hardship or who come from communities traditionally underrepresented at our programs. These registrations are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please write to us directly at info@klezkanada.org for more information.

The KlezKanada Digital Backwards March. Come march, sing, and play along at our virtual Backwards March to wrap up KlezKanada’s 25th anniversary and welcome in the Shabes queen! Participate in one of two ways:

  1. by registering on the Eventbrite page for free to be part of the Zoom room, which will allow you to participate in the live broadcast.
  2. by viewing the Facebook Live event on KlezKanada’s Facebook page.

N.B.: All programming is subject to change. Class sizes may be adjusted at the discretion of the instructor at any time. Purchase of festival passes, household passes, and/or day passes does guarantee admission to classes or other programs with limited space.
